 Relative Pronouns

Относительные местоимения в английском языке (who, whom, that, which) используются для ввода придаточных предложений, и вводят дополнительные сведения о ком-либо или чем-либо, уже сказанном.

I know the book that you are describing.

В придаточном предложении, которое вводят относительные местоимения, они могут выполнять функцию подлежащего. В данном случае могут использоваться местоимения who, which, that. Who используется для обозначения людей, which – для обозначения предметов, that может обозначать как людей, так и предметов.

The boy who stole the watch was punished.

It is a book which will interest children of all ages.

The people that/who live next door keep having all-night parties.

These are the keys that open the front and back door.

Также местоимения who, whom, which и that могут выполнять в придаточном предложении функцию дополнения. В данном случае местоимения who и whom взаимозаменяемы, но whomнесет несколько формальный оттенок.

This is the person who you need to talk to. (Данное предложение более употребительно.)

This is the person whom you need to talk to. (Данное предложение имеет несколько формальный оттенок.)
